What is ume?

Ume, also known as Japanese apricot or plum, is a small fruit tree native to China and Japan. The fruit is round and resembles a miniature plum, with a tart and sour flavor. Ume is often used in Japanese cuisine to make pickles, sauces, and alcoholic beverages such as umeshu (plum wine).

Ume is rich in vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants. It is believed to have medicinal properties and is commonly used in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine to treat various ailments such as digestive issues, sore throats, and hangovers.

Ume trees bloom with delicate white or pink flowers in early spring, making them popular ornamental trees in Japan. The fruit is harvested in late spring and early summer, and is often preserved in brine or vinegar to be enjoyed throughout the year.
