What is understitching?

Understitching is a sewing technique used to create a clean and professional-looking finish on garments, especially those made with thin or delicate fabrics. It involves stitching the seam allowance to the facing or lining of a garment, which helps to keep the facing or lining in place and prevents it from rolling to the front of the garment.

To understitch, first sew the seam as usual, then press the seam allowances towards the facing or lining. Next, carefully stitch along the edge of the facing or lining, securing the seam allowances in place. It is important to stitch close to the edge without catching the garment fabric. Trim the excess seam allowance if necessary.

Understitching can be done by machine or by hand, depending on the garment and the desired finish. It is a simple yet effective technique that can greatly improve the overall quality of your sewing projects.
