What is upgaze?

Upgaze is the upward movement of the eyes. It is one of the six directions of eye movement, which also includes downgaze, left gaze, right gaze, intorsion, and extorsion. Upgaze is controlled by the superior rectus muscle and the inferior oblique muscle. It is necessary for activities such as reading, looking at a tall building, or tracking objects in the sky. Abnormal upgaze may indicate neurological conditions such as brainstem lesions or oculomotor nerve palsy. Different types of tests, such as the doll's eye reflex or the oculocephalic reflex, can be used to assess upgaze and other eye movements.
