What is vandwelling?

Vandwelling is the practice of living or travelling in a van that has been converted into a livable space. People who choose to live in a van do so either by choice or out of necessity. Some vandwellers, also known as van lifers, are digital nomads or adventurers who work remotely and travel the world, while others live in their vans to save money on rent or to simplify their lives.

To convert a van into a livable space, vandwellers typically need to insulate the van, install a bed and a living space, and add basic amenities like a stove and a sink. Many vandwellers also install solar panels or a power system to run appliances and charge electronic devices.

Living in a van can be challenging due to limited space and the lack of some home amenities, but many vandwellers find it rewarding and freeing. However, it's important to note that vandwelling is not always a legal or accepted practice, and some areas have laws and regulations that restrict overnight parking or living in a vehicle.
