What is varmas?

Varma Kalai, also known as Varma Vidya or Varma Ati, is a traditional Indian martial art and science that involves the manipulation of body's energy (prana) or vital force (vayu) to attack and defend the opponent. It is believed to have originated in Tamil Nadu, India, around 2,000 years ago, and was practiced by the warriors and healers of the Chola, Chera, and Pandya dynasties.

Varma Kalai consists of three main aspects: the martial aspect, the medicinal aspect, and the spiritual aspect. Its combat techniques include strikes, kicks, locks, throws, and pressure point manipulation aimed at injuring the opponent's vital points (marmas), disrupting their flow of energy, and causing pain, numbness, paralysis, or even death.

The medicinal aspect of Varma Kalai involves the use of pressure points and massage techniques to heal injuries and illnesses, relieve pain, and enhance the body's natural healing abilities. It is believed that the manipulation of pressure points can also cure more serious ailments like paralysis, epilepsy, and migraine.

The spiritual aspect of Varma Kalai emphasizes the cultivation of inner strength, mental discipline, and moral values. It is regarded as a path towards self-realization, enlightenment, and liberation.

Today, Varma Kalai is still practiced in some parts of India, especially in Tamil Nadu, and has gained popularity in other countries as well. It has been recognized as a cultural heritage and is gradually gaining recognition as a valuable martial art and science.
