What is vassalage?

Vassalage was a system of feudalism in medieval Europe. It involved a lord, who owned land and had power over others, and vassals, who were granted land and protection in exchange for loyalty and military service.

The vassals would swear an oath of loyalty to the lord, and were expected to provide a certain number of knights for the lord's armies. In return, the lord would provide protection and support for the vassals.

Vassalage was also a form of social hierarchy, with each level owing loyalty and service to the level above it. This system helped to maintain order and stability in medieval society.

Over time, vassalage declined in importance as centralized monarchies emerged and the power of individual lords decreased. However, the legacy of vassalage can still be seen in some modern political systems, where individuals pledge loyalty and support to powerful leaders.
