What is whilst?

Whilst is a conjunction that means "during the time that" or "at the same time as". It is often used to connect two events or actions that happen simultaneously.

Example: "Whilst I was cooking dinner, my husband was setting the table."

Whilst can be used in formal and informal contexts, although it is more commonly used in British English than in American English. It is considered slightly more formal than the word "while", although the two words are interchangeable in most cases.

It is important to note that whilst should not be confused with "wilst", which is an archaic form of "while" and is not used in modern English.
