Okechukwu Victor Wigwe, often referred to as Herbert Wigwe (August 15, 1966 – February 9, 2024), was a prominent Nigerian banker and entrepreneur. He served as the Group Managing Director and CEO of Access Bank PLC, one of Nigeria's leading financial institutions.
Wigwe played a crucial role in transforming Access Bank from a relatively small player into a major force in the Nigerian and African banking sectors. His leadership was marked by ambitious expansion strategies, including mergers and acquisitions, notably the acquisition of Intercontinental Bank in 2012. He held a degree in Accountancy and a Master's degree in Banking and Finance from the University of Wales, as well as an MSc in Financial Economics from the University of London.
Beyond his role at Access Bank, Wigwe invested in various ventures, demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit. He founded Wigwe University, a private university in Rivers State, Nigeria, aimed at providing quality education and fostering innovation.
Tragically, Herbert Wigwe, his wife, and his son died in a helicopter crash in California on February 9, 2024. His death was widely mourned in Nigeria and the global business community. He left behind a legacy of transformative leadership, innovation, and commitment to economic development. His impact on the Nigerian Banking Sector is significant.
