What is woomeras?

Woomeras are an ancient Indigenous Australian hunting tool used by various Aboriginal tribes for hundreds of years. They are also known as a spear throwers or spears thrower wands. The woomera consists of a long, narrow piece of carved wood, up to 2 meters in length, with a hollowed-out end that fits the base of a spear.

The woomera greatly improved the accuracy and force of the spear, making it an effective hunting and fighting tool. It also allowed hunters to throw heavier spears, increasing their range and hunting success.

Woomeras were traditionally made from wood, and decorated with intricate designs and patterns. Nowadays, modern materials such as plastic, fiberglass, and even carbon fiber are used to make woomeras.

While woomeras are no longer used as much in hunting, they are still an important part of Aboriginal culture and traditions. They are often used in ceremonies and for traditional games, helping to keep the ancient tool alive and remembered.
