What is yarini?

Yarini is a term used to refer to male sex workers in Cuba, particularly those in Havana during the early 20th century. They were often young, attractive men who would solicit clients in public places such as parks, bars, and dance halls. Yarini became popular among both Cuban and foreign clients, including American soldiers and tourists.

The most famous yarini was Alberto Yarini, who operated during the early 1900s and became a notorious figure in Havana's sex industry. He was known for his extravagant lifestyle, which included owning fancy cars and hosting lavish parties. Yarini was eventually murdered by a jealous rival in 1910.

Despite their popularity, yarini faced significant stigma and discrimination in Cuban society. They were often arrested and subjected to police harassment, and their profession was considered immoral and shameful. However, some yarini managed to gain a certain degree of social and economic status, particularly those who were able to cater to wealthy and influential clients.
