What is zalipie?

Zalipie is a village in southeastern Poland, located in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. It is known for its tradition of painted cottages, with decorative floral motifs covering both the exterior and interior of the buildings. This tradition dates back to the 19th century when women began to paint their homes with leftover paint from painting the interiors of their homes. Today, visitors can see over 20 painted cottages as well as visit the Museum of Painted Folk Architecture, which showcases the history and development of the painted cottages in Zalipie. The village also hosts an annual festival called the Flowering of Zalipie, where locals decorate the village with fresh flowers and visitors can enjoy traditional dances, music, and food.
