Zemlianka is a type of traditional underground shelter or house common in several countries, including Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and some parts of Central Asia. The term "zemlianka" comes from the Russian word "zemlya," meaning earth or soil.
Zemliankas were traditionally used as winter houses or temporary shelters for herders, farmers, hunters, and travelers. They were constructed by digging a trench into the ground and building the roof and walls out of different materials such as logs, sticks, sods, and clay.
Zemlianka’s design features include low ceilings, narrow corridors, small rooms, and a lack of windows. This helps to keep the interior temperature warm during the winter months or cool during the summer months.
Zemliankas are still used today in some rural areas of Russia and Ukraine as summer cottages or weekend retreats. Tourists also visit them as unusual and interesting places to stay.
