Zift is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) that involves the transfer of fertilized eggs or embryos into the fallopian tubes. It stands for "zygote intrafallopian transfer".
During a zift procedure, a woman's eggs are first retrieved and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory via in vitro fertilization (IVF). The fertilized eggs (now embryos) are then transferred into the fallopian tubes using a laparoscope, which is a thin tube with a camera that allows the doctor to see inside the pelvis.
Zift is usually used in cases where a woman has blocked or damaged fallopian tubes that prevent the egg from being naturally transported to the uterus for implantation. It may also be used when other ART methods, such as IVF, are not successful.
The success rates of zift vary, depending on factors such as the woman's age and overall fertility. However, in general, the success rates are similar to those of IVF, which range from 30-40% for women under 35 and decrease with age.
Zift is considered to be a more invasive and complex procedure than IVF and is not as commonly used today due to the availability of other less invasive options.
