What is abhinandan?

Abhinandan Varthaman is an Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter pilot. He gained national attention and widespread recognition in 2019 during the India-Pakistan standoff following the Pulwama attack.

On February 27, 2019, while flying a MiG-21 Bison, he engaged Pakistani fighter jets that were attempting to target Indian military installations. During the aerial engagement, he shot down a Pakistani F-16, although Pakistan has denied this claim.

Subsequently, his aircraft was hit, forcing him to eject. He landed in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. He was captured by Pakistani forces.

While in captivity, he displayed remarkable composure and resilience, adhering to the code of conduct for captured soldiers. He refused to divulge sensitive information.

After about 60 hours, he was released and handed back to India at the Wagah border as a gesture of de-escalation.

For his bravery and courage, Abhinandan Varthaman was awarded the Vir Chakra, India's third-highest wartime gallantry award.
