What is afogados?

Afogados is a traditional Brazilian sandwich that originated in the city of Recife, located in the northeastern state of Pernambuco. The sandwich is made by soaking a meat (usually beef, pork or chicken) in a spicy tomato-based broth until it is moist and flavorful. The meat is then piled into a soft, crusty bun and topped with melted cheese, onions, cilantro, and a dash of hot sauce or other condiments. Afogados is often served with a side of French fries or fried cassava sticks. It is a popular street food in Brazil and is enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.
