Aglibol was a god worshiped in the ancient city of Palmyra, located in modern-day Syria. He was one of the major deities in the polytheistic religion of the city, which was heavily influenced by Greek and Roman cultures. Aglibol's name derives from the Semitic words for "calf" and "lord," suggesting that he was originally associated with a bull deity. However, over time he became associated with the sun and was depicted as a young man dressed in a long robe and a crown of rays. His sacred animal was the gazelle, which was often depicted alongside him. Aglibol was believed to be a protector of the city and its people, and he was often invoked for blessings and good luck. After the city of Palmyra was conquered by the Roman Empire in the 1st century CE, Aglibol became syncretized with the Roman sun god Sol Invictus, further emphasizing his solar associations.
