What is borno?

Borno is a state located in northeastern Nigeria. Its capital is Maiduguri and it was formed in 1976. Borno has a diverse population, including the Kanuri, Babur, Shuwa, and Fulani ethnic groups. The state is mostly known for its long history of conflict with the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram, which has caused mass displacement, destruction, and loss of life in the region. Borno has a primarily agrarian economy, with farming and fishing being the main industries. Wildlife reserves are also a notable attraction in the state, such as the Chad Basin National Park and Sambisa Game Reserve.
