What is bouy?

A buoy is a floating object that is typically anchored to the bottom of a body of water as a navigational aid. Buoys are used to mark hazards, indicate channels, and provide information to mariners about weather conditions, tides, and water depth.

There are different types of buoys, each with a specific purpose. For example, channel buoys mark the edges of navigable channels, while cardinal buoys indicate the direction of safe water around hazards. Buoys can be made of various materials such as wood, metal, or plastic, and are usually brightly colored and equipped with reflective tape or lights for visibility.

Buoys are an important tool for navigation, especially in areas with changing tides, shifting sandbars, or hidden obstacles. They help keep vessels safe and on course while navigating through various waterways.
