BR-116 is a federal highway in Brazil. It is the second-longest highway in the country, covering a distance of approximately 4,475 km (2,780 miles), running from Fortaleza in the northeast to Jaguarão on the southern border with Uruguay. The highway passes through 12 states including Ceará, Pernambuco, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. It is a very important road that contributes significantly to the country's economy by connecting several important cities and industrial zones. The highway is also known for its scenic beauty that attracts many tourists. However, it is also infamous for being one of the most dangerous roads in Brazil due to its high accident rate caused by poor road conditions, excessive speeding, and reckless driving. The Brazilian government is currently investing in improving the infrastructure of BR-116 to make it safer for travelers.
