Maria Elisabetta Casellati is an Italian politician who currently serves as the President of the Italian Senate. Born on September 12, 1946, in the province of Treviso, she was educated in law at the University of Padua. She began her political career with the Christian Democratic Party and later joined the center-right Forza Italia party. She was first elected to the Italian Parliament in 1994 and has been re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate in every election since. She became the first woman to hold the position of President of the Italian Senate in March 2018. Casellati is known for her conservative political views and support for traditional Catholic values. She has also been involved in various parliamentary committees and has been a member of the Italian delegation to the Council of Europe.
