What is contra-alto?

Contra-alto is a type of female singing voice that falls in between the alto and tenor ranges. It is also sometimes referred to as a contralto or a female bass. This voice type is known for its deep, rich, and resonant sound, and is often used in choral music, opera, and musical theater.

Contra-alto singers typically have a vocal range that extends from approximately F3 to F5, and they are characterized by a strong and powerful lower register. They can often sing lower notes with ease, and their voices can add a sense of depth and richness to choral harmonies.

In addition to singing in a choral setting, contra-alto singers may also perform as soloists in opera, or in musical theater productions that require a strong, deep voice. Some famous contra-alto singers include Kathleen Ferrier, Marian Anderson, and Ewa Podles.
