What is cuaresma?

Cuaresma is the Spanish word for Lent, which is a season of fasting, prayer, and penance in the Christian liturgical calendar leading up to Easter. It is typically observed by Catholics, Orthodox Christians, and some other Christian denominations. Lent lasts for 40 days, mirroring the 40 days that Jesus spent fasting in the desert. The season begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday.

During Lent, believers are encouraged to give up something they enjoy, such as a favorite food or activity, as a way of practicing self-discipline and focusing on spiritual growth. Some also choose to engage in acts of charity and service during this time.

Lent is a time of reflection and preparation for the celebration of Easter, which commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is seen as a time to repent of sins, seek forgiveness, and strengthen one's relationship with God. The color purple is often used during Lent to symbolize penance and preparation.
