Cuauhtémoc was the last Aztec emperor of Tenochtitlán (now Mexico City) and ruled from 1520 to 1521 during the Spanish conquest of Mexico. His name means "Descending Sun Serpent" in the Nahuatl language. Cuauhtémoc fought against the Spanish conquistadors led by Hernán Cortés and defended his people bravely. However, due to a combination of factors such as disease and internal conflict, Mexico City fell to the Spanish in 1521 and Cuauhtémoc was captured and tortured for information on hidden treasures. He resisted and refused to give up any information. He was later executed by the Spanish. Today, Cuauhtémoc is remembered as a symbol of resistance and Mexican nationalism, and his image is often used in Mexican culture and politics.
