What is curtsey?

A curtsey is a traditional gesture of greeting and respect that is made by women and girls by bending the knees and lowering the body slightly as a sign of reverence or deference. It is often used when meeting members of a royal family, in formal occasions such as weddings or balls, or as a sign of respect for those in positions of authority. In some cultures, such as Japan, it is common for men to make a similar gesture, called a bow, as a sign of respect. The word "curtsey" comes from the Old French word "courtesy," which means courtesy or politeness, and it has been a part of etiquette for centuries. While it is still sometimes used today, particularly in more formal settings, the gesture is becoming less common in modern society.
