What is duckets?

Duckets were coins used in Europe from the later Middle Ages until the 20th century. Several types of gold and silver duckets existed.

  • A gold ducat was close to the gold content of the Florentine florin, around 3.5 grams of .986 fine gold.
  • Originally issued in Venice, the design and weight became widely adopted throughout Europe. The Venetian%20Ducat specifically, enjoyed international trade popularity.
  • Different countries and regions issued their own versions of the ducat, often with variations in design and slight changes in gold content. These included the Austrian%20Ducat and those issued by the Netherlands.
  • Silver duckets were also produced, often in regions with less gold, and had lower value.
