What is gastropexy?

Gastropexy is a surgical procedure in which the stomach is attached to the abdominal wall in order to prevent it from twisting or rotating abnormally. This procedure is most commonly performed in dogs to prevent a condition called gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), also known as bloat, in which the stomach fills with gas and twists on itself.

Gastropexy can be performed either as a preventative measure in dogs that are considered at high risk for GDV, such as large and deep-chested breeds, or as a treatment for dogs that have already experienced GDV. The procedure can be done through traditional open surgery or minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery.

Overall, gastropexy is a highly effective procedure for preventing or treating GDV in dogs and can greatly improve their chances of survival. It is important for pet owners to discuss the risks and benefits of gastropexy with their veterinarian to determine if it is the right option for their dog.
