What is ghungroos?

Ghungroos are small metallic bells that are worn around the ankles in traditional Indian dance forms, such as Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Kuchipudi. These bells are made of brass and usually come in pairs.

Ghungroos add a rhythmic element to the dance and their sound complements the music. They are used to accentuate footwork and enhance the grace of the dancer’s movements. The number of bells in each ghungroo set can vary, with some sets having as few as 10 bells, and others having up to 200 bells.

It takes a lot of practice to master the use of ghungroos in dance. A beginner may start with a smaller set of bells, while a more experienced dancer may use a larger set with more bells. The sound of the ghungroos is an integral part of a dancer's performance, and the bells are often regarded as sacred in Indian culture.

Apart from being used in traditional dance forms, ghungroos are also used in other forms of music and performance, including devotional music and folk dances. They are available in various sizes, and can be purchased from specialty stores in India or online.
