What is golu?

Golu is a traditional Hindu festival celebrated in the southern Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh during the Navaratri festival. During Golu, families set up a display of dolls, figurines, and idols on steps or shelves in their homes in a decorative arrangement. The dolls and figurines represent various gods, goddesses, and characters from Hindu mythology, as well as everyday life scenes.

The Golu display typically consists of 5, 7, 9, or 11 steps, with each step representing a different theme or story. It is a way for families to showcase their creativity, artistic skills, and religious devotion. Guests are invited to visit homes with Golu displays and are treated with snacks, sweets, and traditional music and dance performances.

Golu is a popular cultural tradition that fosters community engagement, creativity, and social bonding. It is also believed to bring good luck and prosperity to the household. The festival is a time for families to come together, celebrate, and share the joy of the Navaratri season.
