What is gouania?

Gouania is a genus of flowering plants in the family Rhamnaceae. It is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas and includes about 70 species. The plants are usually shrubs or small trees and have simple, serrated leaves and small flowers that are often inconspicuous. The fruit is a small berry or drupe that is often covered in spines or prickles. Some species of Gouania have been used in traditional medicine for their anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. They are also used as a source of food for wildlife and livestock. One species in particular, Gouania lupuloides, is sometimes cultivated as an ornamental plant for its attractive foliage and flowers.
