What is grinkgo?

Ginkgo biloba, commonly known as ginkgo or maidenhair tree, is a unique species of tree that is native to China and has been cultivated for thousands of years. The tree is popular for its medicinal benefits and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat various ailments such as memory loss, dementia, anxiety, and depression.

Ginkgo trees can grow up to 120 feet tall and have long, fan-shaped leaves that turn bright yellow in the fall. The trees are dioecious, meaning they have separate male and female trees, and the female trees produce fleshy, edible seeds that are considered a delicacy in some cultures.

The active compounds in ginkgo are believed to be flavonoids and terpenoids, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown that ginkgo may improve cognitive function, reduce anxiety and depression, and improve blood flow to the brain.

However, ginkgo should be used with caution as it can interact with certain medications and may cause side effects such as headaches, dizziness, and digestive issues. It is always best to consult with a healthcare professional before taking any herbal supplement.
