What is herbsaint?

Herbsaint is a brand of anise-flavored liqueur that is produced in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was originally created in the 1930s as a substitute for absinthe, which was banned in the United States at that time. Herbsaint contains the distinctive flavor of anise, along with other botanicals such as fennel, mint, and other herbs.

Herbsaint is commonly used in cocktails, particularly in the traditional New Orleans cocktail called the Sazerac. It can also be used as a substitute for absinthe in other cocktails, such as the popular New Orleans drink, the Herbsaint Frappé.

Herbsaint is usually bottled at around 45% alcohol by volume (90 proof) and has a clear appearance similar to that of absinthe. The brand is currently owned by Sazerac Company, who continue to produce and distribute Herbsaint to this day.
