What is jineterismo?

Jineterismo is a term used in Cuba to describe the practice of hustling or engaging in prostitution with foreign tourists for money or gifts. This practice became more common during the 1990s in response to Cuba's economic crisis, and it continues to be prevalent in tourist areas today.

Jineteros and jineteras, the individuals who engage in jineterismo, often try to create a personal relationship with tourists in order to obtain money, gifts, or the possibility of leaving the country. While some may engage in sexual activities, others may offer tours, shopping companionship, or other services to tourists.

Jineterismo has both positive and negative effects on Cuba's economy. On the one hand, it can bring money into the country and help struggling families. On the other hand, it can perpetuate the stereotype of Cuba being a "sex tourism" destination and exploit vulnerable individuals who feel they have no other option.

The Cuban government has taken steps to combat jineterismo, including cracking down on prostitution and offering more job opportunities to its citizens. However, some argue that more needs to be done in terms of addressing the root causes of jineterismo, such as poverty and lack of economic opportunities.
