Kharkhorin, also known as Karakorum, is a historic city located in the Ovorkhangai Province of Mongolia. It was the capital of the Mongol Empire under the rule of Genghis Khan in the 13th century.
Kharkhorin was established in 1220 and served as the political, cultural, and economic center of the Mongol Empire for several decades. The city was a strategically important hub for trade and diplomacy, connecting the empire to various regions in Asia and Europe.
The city featured a palace, temples, and a fortified wall to protect it from invaders. The most famous building in Kharkhorin was the Erdene Zuu Monastery, which was built in the 16th century and is one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in Mongolia.
