What is kibra?

Kibra is short for Kibera, which is a large informal settlement located in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. It is one of the largest slums in Africa, with estimates of the population ranging from 170,000 to over 700,000 people.

Kibera is primarily made up of informal housing, consisting of small shacks made from corrugated metal and other materials. Many residents of Kibera struggle with poverty, limited access to education, and lack of access to basic necessities like clean water and sanitation facilities.

Despite these challenges, there are many community-led initiatives in Kibera aimed at improving living conditions and providing support to residents. These include schools, health clinics, and small businesses.

In recent years, Kibera has also garnered international attention for its vibrant arts community, with many musicians, artists, and performers calling the slum home. Kibera is also the site of the annual Kibera Film Festival, which showcases films made by and about residents of the settlement.
