What is leucoagaricus?

Leucoagaricus is a genus of mushroom-forming fungi in the family Agaricaceae. The mushrooms are characterized by their white or pale-colored caps and gills, and typically have a cylindrical or bell-shaped cap that flattens with age. They are found in temperate and tropical regions worldwide, often in woodland habitats and grassland.

Several species in the genus are edible, including the shaggy parasol (Leucoagaricus americanus) and the field mushroom (Leucoagaricus leucothites). However, some species are toxic and can cause gastrointestinal upset or even death if consumed.

Leucoagaricus fungi play an important ecological role as decomposers, breaking down organic matter in the soil and contributing to nutrient cycling in ecosystems. They can also form mutualistic relationships with plants, providing nutrients and receiving carbohydrates in return.
