What is maharram?

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and one of the four holy months in Islam. It is a month of mourning for Muslims, particularly the Shia community, as it marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, and his followers in the Battle of Karbala in the year 680 AD. The observance of Muharram involves fasting, attending commemorative rituals and processions, and listening to lectures about the events of Karbala. These rituals vary depending on cultural and regional traditions. The mourning period culminates on the tenth day of Muharram, known as Ashura, which is observed as a day of sorrow and mourning. For some Muslims, Ashura is also a day of fasting and charity.
