What is mangoworms?

Mangoworms are parasitic fly larvae that infest the skin of mammals, particularly domestic animals such as dogs and cats in sub-Saharan Africa. They are commonly found in areas with poor hygiene and sanitation.

These larvae burrow into the skin of the host and create characteristic swollen, pus-filled lesions known as myiasis. If left untreated, mangoworm infestations can cause severe discomfort, pain, and even death.

Treatment of mangoworm infestations typically involves manual removal of the larvae from the affected area, along with appropriate wound care to prevent infection. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove deeply embedded larvae.

Pet owners can help prevent mangoworm infestations by regularly grooming and inspecting their animals for signs of infestation, practicing good hygiene, and keeping their living environment clean.
