Jacob Levy Moreno (1889-1974)

Jacob Levy Moreno was a Romanian-American psychiatrist, sociologist, and educator, considered one of the pioneers of group psychotherapy and the development of psychodrama. He's best known for his contributions to the fields of psychotherapy and sociology, particularly for developing Psychodrama, Sociometry, group psychotherapy, and role theory.

 • Psychodrama: A method of psychotherapy in which clients use spontaneous dramatization, role-playing, and dramatic self-presentation to investigate and gain insight into their lives. It is frequently conducted in a group setting, although can be used individually.

 • Sociometry: Moreno's approach to quantifying social relationships. It's a quantitative method for measuring the social relationships among people. It is often used to improve teamwork by showing the existing social structure and which people are central or isolated.

 • Group Psychotherapy: Moreno significantly shaped the development of group psychotherapy. His emphasis on the here-and-now, spontaneity, and the interaction of individuals within a group are all central to modern group therapy approaches.

 • Role Theory: Moreno conceived of roles as the functional units of behavior in social settings. Individuals enact roles, both prescribed and self-created, which shape their interactions and identities.

Moreno founded the Sociometric Institute in 1942 and the journal Sociometry (later renamed Social Psychology Quarterly). He emphasized the importance of creativity and spontaneity in human interactions and believed that these qualities are essential for psychological well-being.
