What is najeonchilgi?

Najeonchilgi is a traditional Korean craft of lacquered mother-of-pearl inlay that dates back to the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392). Najeonchilgi is made by gluing and affixing thin pieces of mother-of-pearl onto a lacquer-coated surface. The mother-of-pearl pieces are then polished and smoothed to create a decorative, colorful design. The finished product is often used to create jewelry boxes, tableware, and decorative objects such as screens and mirrors. Najeonchilgi requires a great deal of skill and patience and continues to be a prized cultural tradition in Korea. The craft has been designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Korean government.
