What is otherization?

Otherization refers to the process of defining and delineating one's own identity by creating and reinforcing boundaries between one's self and other individuals or groups. It represents a way of understanding the world around us by identifying those who are different from us and categorizing them as "other," often with negative connotations. This process can occur based on differences in race, culture, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or any other aspect of identity. Otherization can lead to discrimination, prejudice, stereotyping, and social exclusion, and it is often a factor in conflicts and violence between different groups. It is important to recognize and challenge otherization in everyday interactions and to promote understanding and acceptance of diverse identities.
