What is paratactic?

Paratactic is a type of sentence structure in which clauses or phrases are placed next to each other without any connecting words or grammar. This creates a simple, direct style that can be effective in certain types of writing, such as journalism, or in dialogue to convey a more informal or conversational tone. However, it can also produce a choppy or disjointed effect if overused or if the clauses do not flow smoothly together. Paratactic sentences are often contrasted with hypotactic sentences, which use conjunctions or subordinating words to link ideas in a more complex or hierarchical structure.
