What is plaq?

Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) is a medication used to treat and prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. It is also used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Plaquenil belongs to a class of drugs known as antimalarials and anti-rheumatics.

Plaquenil works by killing the parasites that cause malaria and by decreasing inflammation in the body. It is usually taken orally, with or without food, as directed by a healthcare provider.

Plaquenil can have certain side effects, such as nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and headaches. Rarely, it can cause serious side effects such as damage to the retina of the eye, which can lead to vision problems. Other serious side effects include heart problems and liver damage.

It is important to inform a healthcare provider of all medications and supplements being taken before starting Plaquenil, as it can interact with certain drugs, such as blood thinners and certain HIV medications. Plaquenil is not recommended for pregnant women or women who are breastfeeding.
