What is pootana?

Pootana is a demoness in Hindu mythology who is associated with death and destruction. She is considered to be one of the most dangerous and evil creatures in Hindu mythology and is said to have the ability to take the form of any living being.

According to Hindu mythology, Pootana was sent by the demon king Kamsa to kill infant Lord Krishna. She assumed the form of a beautiful woman and tried to breastfeed him with her poisoned milk, but Krishna sucked the life out of her, thereby killing her.

Pootana is often depicted in Hindu art and iconography as a fierce, black-skinned woman with sharp teeth and a long, protruding tongue. She is usually portrayed with a baby in her arms, symbolizing her role as a child-killer.

In Hindu culture, Pootana is often invoked in rituals and ceremonies meant to protect children from harm. She is also believed to have the power to dispel negative energy and protect against evil spirits.
