What is prndl?

PRNDL is an acronym commonly used to refer to the gear shift positions in automatic transmission vehicles. It stands for:

  • P - Park: Locks the transmission, preventing the vehicle from moving. It's typically used when you want to keep the car stationary without applying the brakes.

  • R - Reverse: Engages reverse gear, allowing the vehicle to move backward.

  • N - Neutral: Disconnects the transmission, allowing the vehicle to roll freely. It's sometimes used in car washes or when the vehicle is being towed.

  • D - Drive: Engages forward gears, allowing the vehicle to move forward. The car will automatically select the appropriate gear while driving.

  • L - Low: Provides low gear ratios for increased power and torque at lower speeds. It’s often used in situations like towing heavy loads or driving on steep inclines where more power and engine braking are needed.

In more modern vehicles, the gear shift may include additional options beyond PRNDL, such as sport modes or manual shift capabilities for greater driving control.
