Roberto Ayala is a retired Argentine professional football player who was born on April 14, 1973, in Paraná, Argentina. He played as a central defender and was known for his strong and solid defending skills. Ayala began his playing career in 1991 with Ferro Carril Oeste before moving to River Plate in 1992, where he won the Apertura tournament in 1994. He then moved to Italy, where he played for Napoli, AC Milan, and Valencia.
Ayala earned 115 caps for the Argentine national team, making him the second-most capped player in the country's history. He played in three World Cups (1998, 2002, and 2006) and captained the national team in the 2006 tournament. Ayala was also part of the Argentine team that won the gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.
After retiring from professional football in 2011, Ayala went on to become a football coach. He has coached clubs in Argentina, Spain, and Turkey, where he currently coaches the Istanbul Basaksehir team. Ayala is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the history of Argentine football.
