What is rubp?

RuBP, or ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate, is a key molecule involved in the Calvin cycle, which is the process by which plants and algae convert carbon dioxide into glucose during photosynthesis. RuBP is a five-carbon sugar molecule that combines with carbon dioxide in the presence of the enzyme ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO) to form an unstable six-carbon molecule that eventually breaks down into two molecules of 3-phosphoglycerate. These molecules are then converted into glucose through a series of enzymatic reactions. RuBP is constantly being regenerated in the Calvin cycle to be used again in the fixation of carbon dioxide.
