What is samodiva?

Samodiva is a legendary creature found in Bulgarian folklore, believed to be a beautiful and alluring forest spirit. She is often depicted as a seductive maiden with long, flowing hair, who dances and sings in the moonlit forests. Samodivas are said to have the power to enchant or bewitch anyone who encounters them, often leading them astray or causing them harm.

Some tales describe Samodivas as benevolent creatures who protect the forests and wildlife, while others portray them as dangerous and vengeful beings who can bring misfortune to any who cross their path. It is believed that Samodivas are most active during the spring and summer months, when the forests are in full bloom.

In Bulgarian folklore, it is said that Samodivas are best avoided, as they are capricious and unpredictable beings who can easily lead mortals to their doom. Despite their beauty and allure, encountering a Samodiva is often seen as a dangerous and potentially lethal encounter.
