SBX-1, also known as Sea-Based X-Band Radar, is a large, mobile, phased-array radar system that provides long-range detection, tracking, and discrimination of ballistic missiles. It was developed by the United States Department of Defense's Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and prime contractor Raytheon.
SBX-1 is mounted on a modified semi-submersible oil drilling platform and can operate in all weather conditions. It is capable of detecting and tracking missiles at ranges of up to 2,000 miles (3,219 km) and provides highly accurate information to support missile defense systems.
The SBX-1 system has been deployed in various regions around the world, including the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Alaska, Hawaii, and Japan. Its primary mission is to support the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system, which is designed to intercept incoming threats in the midcourse phase of flight.
