What is scagiola?

Scagiola, also known as scagliola, is a decorative plaster made from selenite or gypsum mixed with glue or casein, pigments, and water. The technique was developed in the 17th century as a more affordable alternative to traditional marble or stone inlay for architecture and furnishings. Scagliola produces a range of vibrant colours and designs, often mimicking the look of marble and other ornamental stones. The resulting material is durable, resistant to wear and stains, and can imitate the veining patterns found in natural stones or even wood. Today, scagliola is primarily used for interior decoration, often found in grand palaces, public buildings, and high-end residences.
