Schmalkalden is a town in the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen, in the state of Thuringia, Germany. It has a population of around 20,000 people.

In 1531, the Schmalkaldic League, a military alliance of Protestant princes in the Holy Roman Empire, was founded in Schmalkalden. The town was also the site of the Schmalkaldic War in 1546-1547, a conflict between the Protestant league and the Holy Roman Emperor.
